Rock Candy

For younger kids, and adult supervision required

Time: 40-50 mins (but the candy will take a week to form)

Have you ever wanted to make some sweet and savory candy right at home? Now you can! Just make sure to have some adult supervision, of course.

You will create some tasty rock candy right from scratch!

Materials:

3 cups of cane sugar

Water

Pencil

A small piece of string

A glass jar

A microwave

Steps:

1. Pour 3 cups of sugar and a cup of water into the jar. Gently stir it for a few minutes.

2. Heat this solution in a microwave for four minutes. Make sure to have adult supervision or help here, since the jar will be hot after the four minutes!

3. Stir the solution again after heating.

4. Next, take the string and tie it around the middle of the pencil. Make sure the tail of the string is shorter than the height of the second jar. Otherwise, you’ll have to cut it.

5. Dip the string into the jar. Place the ends of the pencil on the lips of the jar so it doesn’t fall in.

6. After a minute, pull the string back out, and wait for the solution to reach room temperature. This may take a while, so you may want to lay the string somewhere else, like in another unused jar, or wax paper.

7. Put the string back in. Now we have to be patient.

8. After about a week, sugar crystals will form all over the string! Your rock candy will finally be ready! Enjoy!
